"After getting my GED, I wasn't sure what my next step was going to be. I always thought about going to college, but was told by some that a degree was only a piece of paper that didn't guarantee I would get a job. Still, I wanted to be able to provide for myself and believed that college could be the answer to financial security. The thought of starting college was confusing and I had a lot of questions. I was able to get the answers that I needed from the GED Scholars Initiative at Kent State, and now I'm in my first year of college; the one place I thought I would never be."

In order to apply as a freshman at Kent State University, you must supply your GED or high school transcripts , a $40 application fee, and your ACT/SAT scores (test scores are not necessary if over the age of 21). Certain programs - like Education, Architecture, or Nursing- may require different or additional criteria for admission. Check to see if the program you wish to enter has any special admission requirements by calling the Office of Admissions or visiting the program's website.

Once accepted, there are number of tasks you must complete before the school term begins. You will receive a freshman welcome packet outlining all of these steps.

Matriculation Fee
$150 fee. Aditional fees may be applicable depending upon the program in which you enroll.

Admitted Student Program
Once admitted to the university, you will receive a welcome packet and registration information for Destination Kent State. During this required program, you will learn more about what Kent State has to offer; take a placement test; meet an advisor and schedule for classes.

Housing Application
If you wish to live in the dorms, you will need to complete the Housing Application. You will receive your housing assignment, as well as the name of your roommate, before the semester begins. This gives you ample opportunity to get to know your roommate.

Placement Testing
Placement testing is administered to all incoming freshmen in order to match the student to the appropriate-level class. The COMPASS test consists of math, reading, and writing. It is a computer test that takes approximately one to three hours to complete. Students do not need to bring anything with them; all materials, including pencils and calculators, are provided. The Office of Admissions will send you instructions on how to schedule your placement test once they have received your application. After taking the placement test, you will participate in the SOAR program where you will be given a brief overview on how to use FlashLine (the university website), the basics of financial aid, and an introduction to advising.
